Heraeus Expands Disposal Capacity in Hanau, Germany
The German company Heraeus Precious Metals, one of the world’s leading precious metal recyclers, is expanding its recycling capacities in Hanau with a EUR35 million investment and 20 new jobs. The move is part of a global expansion program at all Heraeus recycling sites and is designed to meet the increased global demand for platinum group metals.
In the center of Hanau is the old town with beautiful half-timbered houses which recieved Stadtrechte (city rights) in 1303. The city is also famous for the Lamboyfest every year.

Entsorgung Hanau, the day when Swedish forces under General Ramsay besieged Hanau for 9 months during the Thirty Years’ War. After a long and hard struggle the citizens were finally freed by Wilhelm V of Hesse Kassel, an ally of the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf. In honor of this day the city celebrates this event which takes place in June every year.
During the industrial revolution Hanau became known for its goldsmiths. Today the Deutsches Goldschmiedehaus offers insights into the history of this trade. Its exhibits include historic tools, silver and cast iron art, and documents of Hanau’s history. In addition, the museum has a unique paper toy theater.
The Heraeus plant in Hanau recycles PGM (Platinum Group Metals) from end-of-life consumer products, such as automotive catalysts, electronics and jewelry. Compared with primary materials from mines, recycled PGMs have up to 98 percent less CO2 footprint. Heraeus aims to operate CO2-neutral from 2025, and completely abandon fossil fuels by 2033.
